Which Sakrete Models This Applies To

Sakrete does not use “model numbers” the way an appliance does, but their product line has distinct formulations that matter for compatibility. The Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix (4000 psi at 28 days) is what most Sunnyvale driveways were poured with from 2015-2022. Sakrete Paver Set, a polymeric sand for joint stabilization, comes in Tan and Gray - the color matters for matching existing joints. Sakrete Base Coat, used for paver bedding, is graded differently than their All-Purpose Gravel and should not be substituted.

To identify what you have, check for leftover bags in the garage (the SKU is printed on the tear strip) or look for the pour date stamped into the concrete edge. For paver jobs, the joint sand color is your tell - Tan Paver Set weathers to a pinkish cast in Sunnyvale’s UV exposure, while Gray goes chalky white. Signs Your Sakrete Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Individual pavers rock or sink when stepped on. This means the Sakrete Base Coat bedding layer has washed out or the base course (usually Class II aggregate) was under-compacted during install. • Cracks running parallel to the control joints, or spiderweb cracking across the slab. Sakrete High-Strength Concrete Mix needs control joints cut to depth - one-quarter the slab thickness - within 24 hours of pour. • Joint sand washing out during light rain. Sakrete Paver Set is supposed to lock up like mortar after the first watering. If it’s eroding, either the wrong sand was used (play sand instead of polymeric), or the pavers were not dampened before activation, which is the specified install sequence.
• The driveway slab has dropped at the garage threshold or sidewalk interface. This differential settlement usually means the Sakrete base was poured over uncompacted fill - common in Sunnyvale’s post-war subdivisions where utility trenches were backfilled with whatever was handy.

What you can check yourself: measure the crack width with a ruler (hairline under 1/8″ is different from 1/4″ and growing), photograph the efflorescence pattern for our review, and verify whether your downspouts terminate at least four feet from the driveway edge - that’s a common Sunnyvale fix that costs nothing.

Where DIY goes wrong: lifting settled pavers requires removing them without chipping corners, re-screeding the Sakrete Base Coat to proper grade (typically 1″ bedding over 4-6″ compacted aggregate), and re-compacting in lifts so you don’t crush the drainage slope.
