To identify which Schluter component is in your driveway, look for the printed product code on any exposed membrane edge, typically visible where the driveway meets a garage slab or foundation wall. TROBA-PLUS carries a dimpled profile, about 3/8-inch thick, with a geotextile fabric bonded to one side. DITRA is thinner, with a grid of square cavities visible from below. KERDI is a smooth, orange-tinted sheet, usually buried against vertical surfaces.

OEM Schluter parts are manufactured in Germany and carry specific load ratings for vehicular traffic. Aftermarket equivalents exist for drainage mats, but we do not recommend them for driveway applications. The TROBA-PLUS crush rating (approximately 5,000 psf) is calibrated for repeated vehicle loading, and most generic dimple mats rated for landscape use fail at roughly half that pressure. For DITRA and KERDI in transition zones, OEM is the only specification we write into our quotes.

Signs Your Schluter Driveway & Pavers Is Failing

• Water pooling on the driveway surface that did not pool before. This usually means the TROBA-PLUS drainage mat beneath the pavers has become clogged with sediment or has collapsed under load, preventing water from reaching the drainage bed. • Visible membrane edge pulling away from the garage slab or curb. Schluter profiles are secured with adhesive and mechanical fasteners. UV exposure at exposed edges, or ground movement from our seasonal soil expansion and contraction, can break that bond and allow water infiltration behind the system.
• Sunken or bellied section developing along the driveway centerline. This suggests the drainage aggregate beneath the TROBA mat has washed out through a breach in the membrane, creating a void that compacts under vehicle weight. The membrane itself may be intact but the seal at a seam or penetration has failed.

DIY or Call Us?

There is no high-tension danger in Schluter membrane work, but there is a costly mistake that DIY owners make repeatedly: relaying pavers without correcting the drainage slope. The Schluter system depends on a minimum 1/4-inch-per-foot fall to the drainage point. Homeowners who lift pavers, patch the membrane, and replace the bedding sand often restore the surface level without checking that slope. Six months later the pooling returns, and the second repair costs more because the new bedding layer is contaminated.

What you can safely check: walk the driveway with a 4-foot level after rain. Note exactly where water stands. Photograph any exposed membrane edge that has pulled loose.
